When we need a caffeine hit during hot weather, there is only one answer – Iced coffee! This chilled beverage is perfect any time of day but especially in the Summer when just the thought of a hot drink makes us start sweating.
Read on to learn how to make the perfect iced coffee at home with just a few simple ingredients.
The Golden Rule of Iced Coffee
The one rule when making an iced coffee is simple:
Do not use cold water when brewing the coffee
This might sounder counterintuitive but the reason is simple. The coffee still needs to be brewed to maximise the coffee flavour. As I am sure many of you know, heat is integral to achieving this.
The exception to this rule is cold brew, which is made differently to iced coffee. We will cover how to make this in a later blog post!
What Coffee Should You Use?
As you might expect, we at JayandCo strongly believe that you should use only the finest quality freshly ground coffee. For our recipe below we are using our Kenya Dark Roast Coffee to help ensure an intense flavour, but by all means, use whichever variety you prefer – Just make sure it is fresh coffee, not instant, otherwise, it will taste horrible.
Iced Coffee Recipe
This recipe serves 1. If you want to serve more people, simply multiply the recipe.
We have included some variations of the below recipe further down the page for those who like their coffee black or less sweetened. We do recommend giving the below recipe a try though, as a little flavour and sweetness enhances the coffee flavour when drunk chilled.
- 200ml of freshly brewed coffee cooled to room temperature OR 2 shots of called espresso and enough cold water to make the total amount of liquid equal 200ml
- 1 tsp of sugar
- ½ tsp of vanilla extract
- 50ml of milk
- 4 ice cubes, plus extra to serve
- Place the coffee and ice into a blender and blitz until the ice is crushed and mixed into the coffee (around one minute).
- Add the milk, sugar and vanilla extract and blend again until thoroughly mixed and slightly frothy.
- Add some ice cubes to a tall glass before pouring in the iced coffee. Serve immediately and enjoy!
The great thing about iced coffee is that it can be altered incredibly easily. As long as you keep the base product (the coffee!) largely the same it will still be delicious. You don’t even need all of the ingredients or equipment mentioned in our recipe!
What to do if you don’t have a Blender
Dissolve the sugar in a tiny amount of hot water from the kettle. Add the other ingredients (excluding the ice cubes, which cannot be crushed this way), stir well and then pour into a glass filled with ice.
What to do if you do not like Coffee with Added Sugar
If you prefer your coffee unsweetened, simply remove these ingredients from the recipe
How to make Iced Black Coffee
Replace the milk with an equal quantity of water.
How will you Make your Iced Coffee?
We hope that you enjoy this recipe. Iced coffee is perfect for the hot weather and, as you can see from above, is very straight forward to make. By keeping the ratio of ingredients largely the same as listed above, you can change the recipe to suit your taste. Why not try adding some cinnamon or switching to de-caff for a caffeine-free treat?
