India – Dark Roast Coffee
Our Indian Coffee is a 100% Arabica coffee with a very mellow body and smooth, malty finish.
What you’ll notice straight away is a distinctively light colour. This is due to how the beans are processed, which takes inspiration from how coffee was shipped from India to Europe in the 19th Century. Beans would be stored below the water line and kept humid because of the porous wood used in the ships’ hulls. This resulted in reduced acidity and a slightly golden raw bean.

“I always recommend this very smooth yet punchy coffee to enjoy an afternoon natter with friends or an early evening social gathering. The focus is on conversation, not that early morning caffeine boost. This medium to dark roast gives a beautifully smooth taste to savour.”
The Origins of our India Coffee
Whilst the processing of this coffee is inspired by the method of shipping from the 19th Century, it is not practical to use this process as it was. Not least because ships tend to be a lot drier these days!
Today, that process is imitated in the Sakleshpur area of India. On hillsides 850m to 1,000m high, growers expose naturally processed beans to moist monsoon winds over a 14-week period. This process helps recreate the low acidity and colour achieved by those early pioneers. Coffee beans swell to double their original size, which helps produce the mellow, distinctive flavour associated with coffee from this part of India.
